The free original was great, but 2 player co-op, added levels and other improvements make it well worth the price.The old games we remember -- many of them actually kind of suck. That's why Cursed Castle EX and Super Hydorah are so great. They have a nostalgic look to them (the CRT effects are good too) but play better and have more depth than the actual games of old.One thing the old games excelled at was pixel art. They did amazing things with limited resolutions and palettes. Most new "retro" games try but fall far short of the quality of the classics. But this game looks fantastic, on the same level as the best arcade and console games of the 80s and 90s.I have to add this is PERFECT for an arcade cabinet install. First, it's native resolution appears to be a 320x180. ArcadeVGA supports 321x200 resolution, so it should run in "exact" mode (pixel perfect) with neglibible letterboxing on a 4:3 display. Second, it supports two players using one keyboard. Which means you can easily configure controls for both players using an I-PAC type USB keyboard encoding device.. Almost as if the Gradius creators had made a tribute to their own game and decided to make it better in some ways, as the power up collection system adds a whole new dimension to the gameplay. Perfect music on top of Perfect everything, now with selectable difficulty so anyone can enjoy.. The game runs way too fast as being unplayable on my 144 Hz monitor. The developer's idiotic "solution" is to run the game on a 60 Hz monitor. Apparently that bug was introduced 1 year ago and is still unfixed. Don't buy.. Exccelent and challenging. Inspired by the shooters of the 80's. I kept meaning to write a review about this game since it came out, but procrastination got the better of me.I originally played the freeware Hydorah several years ago and liked it enough to give the developer, Locomalito, some donation money. When I heard Super Hydorah was being made, I of course jumped on it as soon as it was released. The traditional horizontal shooter style reminds me the most of Gradius. Spefically the Gradius IV/Gradius Gaiden era of the series. This also extends to the music, which has that funky jazz fusion/rock vibe. The controls, gameplay mechanics, and power up system is simple enough where you can dive into it immediately. It provides a good challenge but isn't overwhelmingly daunting. It has multiple paths and several hidden secrets to keep you invested in it. I especially like the fact that you can save/load your progress and pickup on where you left off at any time as you traverse through the multiple paths to the end. Overall, I'm going to echo what was mostly said about this game already and say that it is very well crafted. The dev was obviously mindful of the elements that make a good traditional shooter and was sure to craft that into this game. The Gryzor87 composed soundtrack is great too. "No Mercy" in particular I enjoy. For the shooting game fan of any type, this is definitely a must have game.
